packing electronics for a move

Ahhh technology. We hate to love it but what would we do without our televisions or computers? If you are moving you might be concerned with the best way to go about packing electronics. These are generally expensive items and you want to make sure they get to their new home in great condition.

That means it’s time for you to pick up a little know-how when it comes to tips for packing.

With the following tips you will be able to move your tablets, computers, laptops, video game consoles, stereo equipment and more with ease.

Here is what you need to consider when packing electronics for a move:

Follow instructions

Hopefully you have kept that old instruction manual around. Many of them have great advice to help you pack your electronics for a move. They should also be able to tell you how to store the items without damaging them in any way.

If you don’t see anything like that in the manual, you can check on the manufacturers website, they sometimes have more information.

Save your boxes

If you have the space keep original boxes around. They can be used for packing when it comes time to move. If you don’t have these it can be hard to find the right sized boxes. Valet Storage can shrink wrap your items for you if you cannot find boxes to suit.

Packing materials

If you no longer have the original packing materials, and most people don’t, you need some of the basics.

You will need:

  • Strong boxes/bins
  • Newspaper for wrapping breakable items
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Felt tip markers for labeling

Color stickers for cords

One of the most annoying parts of packing electronics when moving is dealing with all the cords and cables. Consider using colored tape or stickers to mark which cords go with which device. This will save you time and frustration when you get to your new home and are ready to set things up.

Know the storage temperature

Electronics can be finicky. That means things like your computer could be affected by the temperature of the storage unit, if you are choosing storage you need to make sure it’s climate controlled like at Valet Storage.

Make valuables hard to see

The chances of your storage unit getting broken into is exceptionally low but if this is something that concerns you, consider packing electronics at the back of the unit in boxes that are unmarked. You should know however, that when you choose Valet Storage we have 24 hour security and our bunker is locked down tight.

Wrap electronics

When packing electronics for moving it’s important to wrap them. Once of the most destructive things for these devices is dust and wrapping them in linen or clean paper can cut down on the dust that gets into them.

Packing tape

Another way to keep out the dust is to seal each box with packing tape. This is cheap to pick up and is an essential part of getting electronics ready for storage.

Assured protection

When you choose Valet Storage you not only get insurance protection but we also shrink wrap and blanket all of your items so that you know they are protected during the move and in storage if you choose to go that route. We don’t charge extra for the blankets or the shrink wrapping either, which is a departure from the other moving companies in Toronto.

Keep an inventory

Having an inventory of the items you have in storage is a big deal. So many things get packed away in boxes that it can be hard to remember what is where. With the FREE Valet Storage inventory system, you can take pictures and make lists so you never forget what you have in storage again.
