How To Store Paper Properly
There are many reasons that people need to store paperwork. And to do that you need to learn how to store paper.
For some people it is about business, others it’s personal. Personal things you may want to store are old photos, old genealogical documents, birth certificates etc. etc.
The one thing these all have in common is that they are made of paper. Different paper, but still paper that needs to be stored properly if they are going to be expected to last.
Here are some of the most commonly asked questions regarding how to store paper:
How do I preserve old letters and documents?
All paper must be stored in an acid-free and humidity controlled environment. The biggest threats to your papers are:
- Acids in papers
It is recommended that you file your documents in acid-free folders in an acid-free box. These are easy to find in both brick and mortar stores as well as online. Not all folders are acid-free so be sure the ones you buy are or you could be doing more harm than good.
You can also encapsulate your documents between sheets of polyester film. This will give them the protection that they need to last for years and years.
Can my papers go into plastic protector sheets that go in binders?
These should only ever be used if they are made of polyester, polypropylene, or polyethylene. Many of the other plastic sheets have acid in them that will damage your important documents.
Can more than one sheet of paper go into each plastic protector sheet?
That should be fine as long as you put acid-free paper in between your documents.
Should I laminate my documents to preserve them?
No. The high temperatures involved in the lamination process can damage your papers. Plus, if you are looking to preserve the documents for conservation reasons this is not the best course of action because it cannot be undone.
